Choose a type of chord!

Tonic chords (T) I III VI
Subdominant chords (S) II IV VI
Dominant chords (D) III V VII

Any tonic chord can replace another tonic chord.
Any subdominant chord can replace another subdominant chord.
Any dominant chord can replace another dominant chord.

Chords like to move in patterns of

T → S → D → T
T → D → S → D → T
T → S → D → S → T

creating a satisfying cycle of tension and release.
